Books read on vacation

Well I was able to read four books on this trip.

Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde: This is the second book in the Thursday Next series. These books just suck me in. They involve characters in books coming alive, Thursday entering and exiting books, and usually involve a good mystery. I was definitely Lost in a Good Book and look forward to the next one in the series.

The Big Over Easy : a Nursery Crime by Jasper Fforde: This was the story of Humpty Dumpty's great fall told as a mystery. It was a bit slow at start and I was not sure I was going to like the main character, but once I got into the book it was great. I could not put it down once I got going and read this mainly on the flight from Hawaii to Seattle--interrupted for the concert (see previous post).

Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich: This is a between-the-numbers book from the Stephanie Plum series. I don't really know what to think about these books. Stephanie already has two guys vying for her attentions, does she really need a third? They also introduce the paranormal to this series and really the mysteries are enough for me. It was standard Stephanie Plum and it is always humorous to read about the situations she finds herself in!

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd: This is our May book club book so I thought I would get a head start. It was pretty good. I do think I want to see the movie now. I enjoyed the story and felt sorry for the main character. I almost want to know that all turns out ok for her at the end, but I think it does and that is what I am going to believe.

So I managed to read four books while on this vacation. I consider that a good sign for a vacation as I like my downtime and don't always want to go, go, go!!!!

Travel home

On Saturday morning Lynn and Jake had to be up to catch their ride to the parasailing place. Lisa and I worked on getting the condo cleaned up a bit and getting the car loaded. We picked up Lynn and Jake at 10 am--Jake was beaming. He had an awesome time and really enjoyed it. We then dropped off the rental car and caught the shuttle to the airport.

The good news was that we got there in plenty of time, the bad news--we had a marching band on our flight to Seattle! We all loaded onto the plane and I really thought the flight attendant was kidding when she said that the band was going to play for us. Well after the movie (Marley and Me, I chose not to watch since I read the book and knew I would cry), the flight attendant called up members of the band. They had three clarinets and one oboe available (all the rest of the instruments were checked) to play for us. They played and sang their school song and did two other numbers before stopping. It was something you don't see on a flight every day!!!!

We landed in Seattle at 9:44 pm Seattle time and had two hours before our next flight. We went to the main terminal (we were in the Satellite) to get some dinner. After dinner we went back to wait for our flight. We actually left on time (on the same plane as our flight from Hawaii) and this time I sat next to a very nice lady who had to talk. She had just left her husband at Fort Lewis where he was preparing for his second trip to Iraq. So she talked to me for the flight and showed me all the pictures she had taken while in Seattle for a week. She was very nice, but I think I would have enjoyed some sleep :)

We landed at 5:42 AM Minnesota time. We got our luggage and Ricardo came and picked us up. We were back to my place by 7:30ish. Lynn, Lisa and Jake packed up the car and headed back home. I did some unpacking and organizing before napping. Spent the rest of the day doing laundry, paying bills, and uploading some photos.

So there is the story of our trip to Hawaii. Hope you all enjoyed it :)

Pearl Harbor and the Dole Plantation

On Friday morning we tried to get up early so we could leave the condo at 6:15 am to get to Pearl Harbor at 7 am when they open, but apparently the clock in the bedroom was about an hour behind and I did not think to check it. We rushed around the room and still made it to the car by 6:30 am. We were able to get to Pearl Harbor early enough to get the 8 am tour (the first tour is at 7:45 am). That was nice. We walked around the grounds a bit and did a little shopping before it was time to watch the movie. After the movie we took the boat to the memorial itself. I really think this is one of the most impressive and moving memorials in our country and everyone should take the time to visit if you are in Hawaii!!!
http://www.nps.gov/usar/

After our visit we stopped for a quick breakfast before driving out to the Dole Plantation. http://www.dole-plantation.com/
I did not really know what to expect. I had heard about this from other travelers and friends. It was really cool. We did the maze (it is the largest maze in the world). They have 8 secret stations hidden in the maze and you try to find them to get the stencils on your sheet. I managed to find 7 before the heat overtook me and when looking at the map realized, I just was not going to feel up to finding number 8!!!! Jake managed to find all 8 in a little less than an hour! Awesome--the record is 5 minutes, but we think that guy must have cheated a bit.

After the maze we walked through the gardens which had some awesome plants and flowers. They were beautiful. Then we rode the plantation train to see the actual pineapple fields and some more of the crops grown in Hawaii. It was a nice ride and helped to cool us all down from the hot sunshine.

After the train ride we went into the gift shop and restaurant. We did some shopping and I got a pineapple sundae with pineapple topping--yummy!!!!!!!!!

We left there and drove back to the condo. Lynn, Lisa and Jake went down to do some shopping along the beach and I chose to relax on the lanai and read! They also booked Jake's parasail adventure for the next morning.

After Lynn and Jake played a quick game of basketball we went down to have dinner. We ate at Tiki's Bar and Grill http://www.tikisgrill.com/
It was an awesome place for our last night on the islands. We had a great view of the sunset--darn I forgot my camera--and the drinks came with souvenir cups--hee hee!!!! We all ordered dinner and it was yummy. After dinner we took one more walk along the beach before heading back to the condo to start packing.

Luau and Thursday Details

Hi all,

Well I am finally getting around to updating the blog with the rest of our trip.

On Wednesday night we went to the Royal Lahina Luau http://www.hawaiihotels.com/Main/Sub.cfm?Id=103&Ref=RLR
It was right next door to our condo complex, so we were able to walk over. It was less than 5 minutes away--Awesome!!!! We stood in line a bit and then were seated in actually not bad seats. We could see both stages and were close to the buffet. One nice thing about this luau was that there was not a lot of people there!

The dinner was standard luau fare with the pig, some chicken, some steak, some poi, veggies, salad, etc. The coconut cake for dessert was awesome--although I don't need to try the coconut pudding again :) The show itself was cool. They did a variety of dances and the band was really nice to listen to. I think the highlight was the fire dances at the end of the show. It is amazing to watch what those men (and women) can do with fire!!!! We did partake in the open bar (mai tais were ok, but I have had better). We then walked back to our resort and got ready for bed.

Thursday morning we got up and finished packing and cleaning our condo. Our last moments on Maui--boo hoo!!!! Lynn and Jake went down to the beach to take some pictures and then we loaded up the car--hmmm the car had more room on day 1 :)

We caught an Hawaiian Airlines flight to Oahu for our last two nights in paradise. We got to Honolulu about 2 pm and found our luggage. We went to get our rental car (had to upgrade to an SUV to have enough room :)) and then drove to our hotel. We stayed at the Waikiki Banyon
http://www.resortquesthawaii.com/hawaii/propertyOverview.do?propertyGroupId=25557
which was nice, but had a much smaller room than Maui. We did have a very nice view of the mountains and it was wonderful at night--looked like a Christmas tree.

After getting settled Lynn, Jake and I walked along Waikiki Beach which was so much more crowded than the beach on Maui :) I had to buy another suitcase--mine was a bit overweight on the trip over from Maui and then we headed back to the condo.

We got ready for dinner and walked down to an Italian restaurant, Arancino de Mare, near our hotel. http://arancino.com/en/index.html I had the Penne Gorgonzola which was very good. Lynn and Jake had the Lasagne which was very hot and Lisa had Spaghetti and Meatballs. After dinner we walked along the sidewalk and ended up having some ice cream at Haagen Dazs--yummy.

We then went back to the hotel because we had to be up early for our trip to Pearl Harbor.

Tired, but happy

Hi all,

We did not have Internet in Oahu. I will write a longer post soon about the days on Oahu. Got in at 5:45 am this morning and am starting to crash now. Did not get any sleep on the plane. First plane had a marching band that for some reason the flight attendants thought it might be fun to let them play :) Luckily only 4 kids had instruments on the plane, but really 3 clarinets and 1 oboe can get a bit annoying.

Second flight had a woman who needed to talk since she had just left her husband who is leaving for Iraq in two weeks for at least 12 months. Believe me after 2 glasses of wine, she was a bit chatty. I am going to try and nap for a bit and then figure out what laundry needs to be done and which bills need to be paid :)

More tomorrow on the trip. And I promise more pictures are coming!!!!

Wednesday Update

Hi all,

Sorry I did not write yesterday but I was so tired after dinner and shopping that I just went to bed.

Yesterday we had to get up early since Lynn and Jake had to be to Upcountry by 8:30 am for their 9 am Zipline. I wasn't sure about traffic and it turned out we got diverted due to construction, but got them there early enough that Lisa and I could watch the first group go. Wow there is no way I would have done that!!!!!

Lisa and I left to drive to the other side of Upcountry to go to the winery. http://www.mauiwine.com/ I really liked all the pineapple wines, not so much the Merlot. The drive was beautiful and at one point we could see both sides of the island!!!! I also took Lisa to the Church of the Holy Ghost which is a Portuguese church on the island http://www.kulacatholiccommunity.org/

Then we had to go back and get Lynn and Jake. Well they were still alive and Lynn was standing, but barely!!! She barely made it up the fourth tower in the wind since it was blowing so badly. We drove down the back side of the island so we could head to the windsurfing beach near Paia called Hookipa State Beach Park. Jake was a little impressed with the waves :)

We then headed to lunch before going back to the condo. We swam in the ocean and then the pool. After our swim and hot tubbing we got ready for dinner. We went into Lahina town and walked around shopping before eating at Moose McGillicuddy's http://www.mooserestaurantgroup.com/ It was good and we ate on a balcony overlooking Front Street which was cool. We then headed back home for sleep!!!!

Today (Wednesday) we were up early again since Jake had surfing lessons at 8 am and had to be there at 7:30 am. Lynn and I hung out on the beach in Lahina while he surfed. After surfing we came back to the condo and went down to the Ocean. While Lynn and Jake snorkeled, I swam. I headed to the pool and was going to relax in the hot tub, when a small child (at least I hope it was a small child) had an accident in the pool. They closed the pool and as of this writing it is still not open.

Then we went to lunch and after lunch I ran out to send a birthday present to my cousin (Hi Kelsey) and now we are getting ready to head to the luau.

Next post will have some pictures.

Monday Adventures

Well today we all slept in and relaxed this morning. Lynn made us all scrambled eggs, sausage, and French toast :) It was yummy.

Lynn, Lisa and I left at 11 am to get to the Atlantis submarine trip off of Lahina. It was cool. They took us out on a boat to the sub which was waiting off of the shoreline a bit. I do have to say they fit a bunch of bodies on one of those ships!!!!! We went down as low as 126 feet to the floor of the sea. They kept pointing out different fish, but it really depended on which side of the ship you were on if you could see what they were pointing out. There were apparently some eels (but I did not see them), some rays (I saw one), and lots of different schools of fish. It was interesting to see but hard to see out of the windows. I think I saw more wildlife snorkeling the last time I was here :)

We did see a couple of whales off in the distance breeching while we were waiting to load onto the sub. That was kind of cool.

After the submarine trip we stopped off and picked up our luau tickets. We do that on Wednesday night. We can walk from our hotel and it is an open bar :) Might have to indulge a little bit there. Then we had sandwiches for lunch before getting into our swimsuits and heading down to the ocean.

OK today the water was cold--I never thought I would say that, but wow did I have the goose pimples!!! Lynn and I swam around for a short time before going up to the pool, which was a great temp. After swimming a bit I got into the hot tub and then laid on a deck chair for a while.

We left for dinner about 5:30 pm and went to Whaler's Village http://www.whalersvillage.com/ and did a little shopping. We ate dinner at Leilani's beach bar http://www.leilanis.com/
If you ever make it there either save room for dessert or just go for dessert. The Hula pie was awesome and the rest of the table enjoyed the apple crisp. It was a great meal although we could have used a wheelbarrow to get back to the car :)

Tomorrow Lynn and Jake will be doing a zipline and I think, Lisa and I will be going to the winery and visiting the shops in Makawao. After they are done with the zipline we will visit the windsurfing beach and see a bit more of the island.

Here is hoping the water is warmer tomorrow!!!

Depending on how tomorrow goes, I might try to upload some pictures. We will see what happens :)

Happy Easter...

from Maui :)

We arrived after a 10 and a 1/2 hour airplane ride with an hour layover in Seattle. The first leg went well, but the second trip (6.5 hours) had a crying baby behind us. The poor thing was so tired and she could not sleep. Luckily we had our own TV screens and could watch different programs (the volume control worked great!).

We got here about 7 pm Hawaii time (5 hours behind Minnesota) so we were very tired. Got our rental car--free upgrade because they were out of the midsize so we are in an Impala--nice!!! Then drove out to the hotel. We are staying at the Kaanapali Villas
http://www.resortquesthawaii.com/hawaii/propertyOverview.do?propertyGroupId=25568
It is right on the ocean and has a beautiful setting. We got an upgrade here also from a studio to a one bedroom with a pull-out sofa. We also can see the ocean from our very, very small lanai :) But at least we can see the ocean :)

After getting to our room, we then headed down for dinner at the onsite restaurant. It is right on the ocean. The food was pretty good, but we were all so tired that we could barely keep our eyes open. It was then up to the room for bed.

I woke up the first time at 3:30 am and decided to play Easter bunny. Then it was back to bed where I was able to sleep again until 6 am. That was a bit better, but hoping I can sleep in a little more tomorrow. After we all got up and got ready, we went to McDonald's for breakfast :) We needed to do something quick because Lisa, Lynn, and Jake were going up on a helicopter tour. We then headed over to Kahului to find the heliport.

We were early so we went to Wal-mart to get some food for the condo. After Wal-mart I dropped them off at the airport and then I headed out to drive around Kahului. I just meandered for about an hour before heading back to the airport to pick them up.

Sounds like they had a nice time, although both Lisa and Jake were a little green when they got into the car. Lynn was bubbling over though :) We drove back over to Lahaina to do some more grocery shopping (perishables) and then back to the condo. We made sandwiches for lunch and then got ready to go down to the ocean. We hung out at the ocean for a couple of hours and even hit the pool for a bit.

We went to dinner about 5:30 pm. Jake wanted a steak tonight so we just hit Outback so that he could get something he would like. The meal was great and our server was awesome. We had replacement drinks before they were completely empty! Sign of a good server.

After dinner we went into Lahaina to find out where our submarine tour is leaving from tomorrow. We are going on the Atlantis submarine:
http://www.atlantisadventures.com/
It looks fun. We will probably do a bit of shopping afterwards.

So that brings you all up to date. We are so far not burned (well, I am not--can't say the same for Lynn) and enjoying ourselves. We are still suffering from some jet lag, so I can just imagine what the trip back is going to do!

We are currently hanging out in the condo watching some Family Guy DVD that Jake put in.

Talk to you all soon!!!!!
